When advising people on how to choose a vet to fit their needs and those of their barrel horses I stress two main categories in which a vet needs to be a specialist; 1) soundness and 2) dentistry. These are the two things as a barrel racer and trainer I deal with constantly.
I have had the pleasure of having Dr. Wendy Simons as my attending farm vet for several years. She cares for the majority of the horses at our facility from the old retired troopers to the youngsters. Over the years, I have gotten to know her staff and her husband, Jake. She is not only my vet but she and Jake and the staff at Block and Bridle have all become great friends.
Wendy truly cares about her clients and their horses. She is honest, knowledgeable and conservative in her views and treatments. She stays in a constant state of education and keeps abreast of the latest treatments and technology. If she does not have the answer to a problem she will search it out by consulting with other professionals until she finds the solution.
My previous horse Oaken Lena a.k.a. Opie had various soundness issues and was a challenge to keep on the road and performing without having to deal with pain. With Wendy's assistance I was able to stay competitive winning several championships on him. When he was struck down by cancer I could not have asked for better and more loving care from any facility or staff. The whole gang at Block and Bridle are truly a blessing!
My current horse Whistin Alibis a.k.a. Taco is now in her care and I am looking forward to a long and prosperous career with Wendy's assistance.

Dr. Simmons has been our vet for the past several years. She knows horses and has a way about them. Her bedside manner with not only our horses but with us as owners is amazing. She makes sure that we understand the diagnoses and the options for whatever the ailment. Our kids are highly competitive in rodeos with events that are hard on a horse. Dr. Simmons has helped us keep our horses competitive with overall maintenance techniques. She is willing to go the extra mile to keep our horses sound and competitive (not always an easy task around here). Our daughter's barrel horse, Caesar, would have died from a choking episode had Dr. Simmons not come out to the house and worked (very hard) on that horse for over 4 hours to clear the blockage. She did not give up in her efforts and for that, we will be forever grateful. We highly recommend Dr. Simmons to anyone who owns a horse!

On September 11, 2005 my kids and I came home from church to find my best friend and my husband trying to walk my mare, Sierra; she was suffering through a bad case of colic. Even though it was a Sunday, Dr. Wendy Simmons came to the rescue FAST. She treated Sierra as best she could, advised me on what to expect and educated me so that I could make quick decisions. Her guidance and care ultimately resulted in saving Sierra's life. Dr. Wendy and her staff were there for me through the whole experience and for Sierra's recovery at home after undergoing surgery at Colorado State University.
Sierra had a complete 360 degree volvulous of the dorsal and ventral colon. CSU informed me that she most certainly would have died if it were not for Wendy's urgent excellent care and advice. As I'm sure many horse owner's feel, Sierra is a part of my family and I would have been devastated if I had not been fortunate enough to have found such an outstanding veterinary service who cares for animals like they do. Sierra is well on her way to being happy and spirited again. She seems to have made an excellent recovery.
Thank you Dr. Wendy, Judy and all of those who helped us through this tough time!!

Dr. Wendy Simmons has been our veterinarian for over 7 years. We have team roping and barrel horses and will only trust Dr. Simmons to work on them. Two years ago we lost one of our horses to pleural pneumonia; it was a two month struggle to keep him alive. Dr. Simmons worked so hard to try and save him but in the end it was decided to put him down. We are so fortunate to have Wendy as our vet, not only because of the care that is given but because of the genuine concern that Wendy has for us and our horses. Wendy has an unbelievable work ethic and puts 100% in every task that we have thrown her way.

Horses on our place come in varying sizes and so do their problems. Since moving to Colorado, we’ve dealt with colics, lacerations, surgeries, allergies, scratches, OCD and Cushing’s in our five horses. Dr. Simmons has been there for us through it all and provided our horses not only with the care they’ve needed but also a level of quality and concern that is just hard to find. Wendy is the type of vet who calls to check on her patients to make sure they’re still doing OK. She’s there to give advice when you have a question. She’s also great at comforting you as the owner when your horse is facing a serious situation. Wendy and her staff treat our horses like family, the same as we do, and we can’t imagine taking care of our family without Wendy’s help.
